CMS to Add Data Analytics Lead to Its Employees Pool

Data is the buzzword these days. With the vast amounts of healthcare data held by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the organization has deemed it necessary to move away from the generic data scientist role to a specific big-data-related role to enhance healthcare delivery and detect cases of fraud through efficient statistical analysis.

For this reason, CMS has decided to add the role of a Data Analytics Lead to the organization. The candidate selected for the position of Director, Data Analytics and Systems Group, CPI, will be a part of the Department that has, since its inception, touched the lives of every American. Working at the Department of Health and Human Services will provide the candidate with the ability to give back to their community, state, and country by taking initiatives that will make a difference in the lives of Americans at large.

Overview and Summary

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) works in partnership with the healthcare community in order to enhance its quality and efficiency in a healthcare system that is constantly evolving. It further serves to provide leadership in the healthcare industry. Building a career with CMS will provide the perfect opportunity to become part of a highly visible and dynamic organization that deals with important national healthcare issues.

This position is located in the Center for Program Integrity (CPI), within CMS, in Baltimore (Woodlawn), MD in a small elite group of senior government leaders known as Senior Executive Service or SES. Members of the group possess extensive experience and the skills required to lead across organizations.

These executives are responsible for providing strategic leadership and upholding a commitment to public service that goes beyond loyalty to an individual profession or agency mission. Being a member of the SES will provide the chosen candidate with the ability to become an influencer in terms of directing innovation and transformation of the federal government and provide leadership to the next generation of public servants.

Duties

As the Director of Data Analytics and Systems Group, CPI, the candidate will be responsible for providing executive direction and leadership for CMS’ comprehensive analytics strategy. This will include providing data and statistical analysis for Program Integrity (PI) related issues in the Medicare and Medicaid programs while also playing a crucial role in the identification of emerging fraud trends via data mining and other advanced analytical techniques.

The chosen candidate will further provide vision, strategic leadership and executive oversight of internal and external technical activities associated with PI management strategies, integration with the Agency’s legacy systems, maintenance, and system development and enhancements. Upon being hired, the candidate will also represent CMS at Congressional hearings and briefings, serve as an advisor to CMS’ Office of Legislation on key fraud detection legislative proposals, and conduct media interviews.

The opening of this job vacancy shows that CMS is taking on a rather proactive role in terms of mining data and conducting extensive statistical analysis to detect cases of healthcare fraud. As R. David Walk, Jr. of the U.S. Department of Justice stated at the CBI conference held in August 2016, healthcare fraud is a focus of the government, and this job vacancy shows how serious CMS is to look at data via a full range of tools and aggregate data in a way that will allow it to identify wrongdoings.
